The new Mercedes-Benz E Class is probably one of the best mid sized saloons money can buy this year. Its not only well designed but has an interior like no other and one that is second to none in its price range. The new E Class has a new welcomed face lift that give the car a classy yet elegant look along with new better designed headlights. The front of the car has seen some great changes like the Mercedes Badge has been placed into the grille instead of sitting on top. The headlights are sweeping like the design of the car. Over all the car looks like a mini S Class.
This is the 2.0litre model (also comes in a 3.0litre model), it has 192bhp with a top speed of 149mph and can do 0-60mph in 7.3 seconds with a a 72.4mpg fuel economy, beating many of its rivals like the Jaguar XF and the BMW 3 Series.
The interior is one of a kind with its new 12.3inch screen and new sweeping centre console design along with all the latest tech like ambient lighting as standard and leather seats making this car very comfortable. The future for Mercedes is all about better communication between devices using its Car-to-X communication system which allows the vehicle to exchange info with other cars. The brand new BMW 5 series has had a very welcomed upgrade, the older model was somewhat outdated compared to its competition like the Mercedes E Class, Audi A5, Audi A6 and the like. The interior looks very stylish and the new steering wheel is much nicer than the big bulky one on the older models, you can control most functions from the steering wheel and it also comes with paddle shifters. It also comes with a new smart key that allows you to control your car like moving it in and out of tight spaces while your outside of the car. They key is exactly like the 7 series key which is pretty incredible for a car in its class.
The 5 Series comes with a few engine options and the petrol 530i isn’t a 3.0-litre like its name suggests. It is, in fact, a 2.0-litre petrol with a power-boosting turbo to produce 252hp. It can do 0-62mph taking just 6.0 seconds and can do 49mpg – 6mpg better than the 528i that preceded it. Should you want more power there is the the 3.0-litre turbo of the 540i. It comes with xDrive four-wheel drive as standard and can do 0-62mph in 4.8 seconds. The 540i should also return on average 39mpg and emits CO2 emissions of 164g/km for £185 annual road tax.
The bestselling model will likely be the 190hp 2.0-litre diesel in the 520d. It returns 68.8mpg and emits just 108g/km of CO2, yet can sprint from 0-62mph in just 7.5 seconds. It’s the only model to come fitted with a six-speed manual gearbox. Joining the range later, the 520d Efficient Dynamics can return more than 70mpg on a run.
Diesel fans can pick the 3.0-litre straight-six in the 530d – with 265hp, it hits 62mph from rest in 5.7 seconds. It’s smooth, sounds nice and, for the performance available, doesn’t use too much fuel – returning 60.1mpg.
The Audi A7 is one hell of a machine designed beautifully making it look like a transformer. The interior is great. There are quality materials everywhere your hands touch. The steering wheel is well made and handles the car very well. The infotainment system is decent and responsive and has been upgraded from the older, slower systems. The dashboards is informative and well designed. The subtly swooping dashboard and door inserts, the precision cutting of the aluminium centre console controls and the showy arrival of the infotainment screen from a slot in the dash all create an alluring first impression.
There are three main trim levels to choose from – SE Executive, S-line and Black Edition.
