The new Bentley Continental GT is finally here. Designed, engineered and handcrafted right here in Great Britain. This new model has fully adaptive chassis using 48-volt Dynamic Ride System, an all-new 6.0-litre W12 TSI engine with 635hp, a new eight-speed dual-clutch gearbox, cutting-edge Super Formed body tech and a luxurious interior. The new Continental GT will make its world debut at the 2017 Frankfurt Motor Show next month. The Bentley chief executive Wolfgang Durheimer says this new Bentley is “the pinnacle of our design and engineering achievements.”
The new Continental GT is a clear evolution of today’s model but everything has been smoothed out a little bit more. The front of the car looks wider with a grille that stands out and a smooth contoured bonnet resting on top. The front wheels are 135mm further forward, allowing Bentley to stretch the bonnet and lower the nose. The contours above the headlights swoop in towards the centre give this Bentley a distinctive shape. From the side this Bentley looks superb and very elegant. The swooping rear towards the newly designer rear of the car looks great. The long front bonnet that swoops towards that standing grille looks very impressive. The side of the car is Bentley with that raise above the rear wheel and effortless design that catches the eye. Coming onto the rear it has been redesigned and it looks very very good indeed. The oval headlights sit either side of the new concave design for the boot. The twin exhausts look very good either side of the number plate. The wide stance will make this beast recognisable where ever it drives.
Colours? Choose from 17, which apparently leads the luxury GT class for choice, and there’s another 15-colour portfolio for interior leather and carpets. What’s more, a number of launch cars will be offered in a further, limited, range of colours, a fully bespoke colour matching service is also offered.
The new Continental GT interior something that you cannot really imagine. The wood alone should do this: sporting dual veneers for the first time, there’s more than 10 square metres of wood inside each Continental GT, the assembly and fitting of which takes fully nine hours.
There are luxurious surfaces everywhere, with great attention to detail. Bentley uses pillow knurling for some switches and controls as it is more refined than classic mechanical knurling. And diamond knurling delivers a luxurious feel to other surfaces like on the vents, bezels and other controls. Bentley even now fits bronze inserts between surfaces on some controls. The 12.3-inch touchscreen is a great touch to this Bentley and functions well with smooth transitions.
Seats set new industry standards for comfort and can be clad in ‘diamond in diamond’ quilt. All the glass is laminated so you enjoy an interior nine decibels quieter than before. The audio systems comprise a 1,500-watt Bang & Olufsen setup as standard. Pay to upgrade and you can have a 2,200-watt Naim system.
Bentley is the world’s biggest producer of 12-cylinder engines. The new W12 TSI’s “benchmark” performance combines 635hp with 664lb ft of torque, for 0-62mph in 3.7 seconds and a top speed of 207mph. I want one!!!
